The Ellie Gill Band

About Us

The Ellie Gill Band was formed in 2011 as a support group for Clare Teal and her band. Since then the band has gone on to tour and build up a loyal and ever-expanding fan base. The band’s unique blend of jazz, blues, ballads and pop has made them hugely popular with audiences across Yorkshire. The Ellie Gill Band’s new EP ‘Step Out With Us’  was recorded at Legal Studios and is available from our shop and on iTunes.

Band Members

Yorkshire-born Ellie was brought up in a musical family and learned to sing at an early age. Her first influences came from country, bluegrass and folk music, but she has since developed her own brand of soulful jazz and blues. Ellie’s voice has been compared to Mary Hopkin and Joan Baez, and she is also a fine songwriter. Her simple melodies and thoughtful lyrics provide great material for the Band to interpret. Ellie’s solo album “Eye to Eye” was recorded at Legal Studios and is available in our shop.

Originally from Nottingham, Kate is a graduate of the University of Surrey where she studied music. Kate is the Band’s musical director and arranger, and plays piano, clarinet and saxophone. In 2010 Kate created Legal Records to represent the artists who records with her at Legal Studios, including The Ellie Gill Band. Kate has travelled extensively as a pianist, singer and composer and has produced two albums of her own music. Kate loves tennis and horses and holds her private pilot’s license (the result of a major mid-life crisis!)

Kate’s daughter Flick holds a first class honours degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied saxophone with Christian Forshaw. An alumnus of Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, Flick’s passion for music encompasses many genres, from classical to jazz. An accomplished actor, Flick has appeared at the Edinburgh Festival every year since 2014. Flick shares her mum’s love of tennis but refuses to go with her in an aeroplane with only one engine!

Arthur holds a masters degree in electroacoustic composition from Manchester University, and a first degree in music (specializing in saxophone) from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. He is constantly touring with bands, and engaged on cruise ship contracts around the world. Arthur directed a show at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival, and is in high demand as a saxophone player, composer and musical director. Not content with just being an outstanding musician, Arthur also excels in knitting, concreting and alpaca farming.

Will holds a degree in product design and has been a keen drummer since he was six. He has played with Harrogate Youth Jazz Orchestra, Southpaw Jazz Quartet and North Yorkshire soul band The Zealots. He is in demand as a live and session drummer. Will is also an enthusiastic mountain biker, ultimate disc player and also enjoys wood turning.

A fourth year student at the University of Liverpool, Oscar is studying for a degree in veterinary science. He has been playing bass guitar since he was ten, and also plays the violin with Settle Orchestra. Oscar has been a member of Harrogate Youth Jazz Orchestra, The Swing City Jazz Band and numerous jazz combos. He is a passionate rugby player for Wharfedale, and is a keen mountain biker and a closet juggler!
